A true California son, Gary Hutton is a third generation Californian, born and raised on his Grandmother's apple ranch in Watsonville. While the world of glamour and design weren't easily accessible in Watsonville at that time, a glimpse of Kim Novak while filming Vertigo opened a yearning for knowledge of a larger world, and a thirst for beauty and glamour that persist to this day. His down home roots and love of popular culture, contrasted with the love of glamour and beauty is the dichotomy that profoundly informs his work.
Gary Hutton holds a degree in Fine Arts from UC Davis where he studied under Wayne Thiebaud, Robert Arneson, and Manuel Neri, plus an honors degree in Environmental Design from California College of the Arts. His early training in art introduced him to the principals of sculpture and an interest in materiality that continue to pique his imagination.
Gary's fine arts expertise and sensitivity to the needs of art collectors has resulted in a number of interior design projects for many of California's prominent private collectors.
Gary Hutton's formal and academic training in art, sculpture and interior design, along with his affinities for popular culture and hand craftsmanship, are all evident in the pieces in the furniture collection. Consequently his furniture tends to have a clean, sculptural quality together with a quiet luxury and inventive use of materials. Particular attention is focused on comfort as well as the sculptural appearance of each piece in the collection.
2006 marked the 25th anniversary of the founding of Gary Hutton Design. Gary has used this milestone as a catalyst to rededicate himself and his firm to the creative process and the sharing of the joy that it brings, be it in daily work, the mentoring of students, or his philanthropic work. That is why Gary Hutton has the reputation as The Dean of West Coast Design.
Gary Hutton has also been awarded the Vox/Out Style and Design Award in 2002, the San Francisco Design Center "Legacy of Style" in 2005, and a finalist in Interior Design Magazine's Best of Year Awards in 2006 and 2007.
